My Morning Routine: Coffee, Quiet, and the Small Things That Help Me Start Well

I am not someone with a perfectly polished 5 a.m. morning routine.

Most mornings, I’m a mom trying to get everyone where they need to go while also remembering that I have dreams, projects, and a business I’m building somewhere in the middle of it all.

But I’ve learned that a few small rituals can change the way the whole day feels.

Coffee before the noise

Coffee is usually my starting point.

There’s something about making that first cup that signals that the day has officially begun. Whenever I can, I try to actually enjoy it instead of carrying it around the house and reheating it three times.

One of my favorite little everyday things is my favorite coffee cup / coffee accessory. Nothing revolutionary—just one of those small things that makes an ordinary routine feel a little nicer.

And I’ve started realizing how much those little details matter.

Water goes everywhere with me

Right after coffee comes water.

My Owala water bottle has become one of those things that moves around the house with me—from my desk, to errands, to school pickup, to wherever I happen to be working that day.

It sounds incredibly simple, but having a water bottle I actually like using means I’m much more likely to keep it nearby.

One small thing before everything else

Before I get pulled completely into the day, I try to identify one thing that would make today feel meaningful.

Not ten things.

One.

Sometimes it’s something for my business. Sometimes it’s something for my family. Sometimes the most productive choice is simply getting myself organized again.

I’m learning that building something bigger rarely looks dramatic in the moment.

It looks like making the coffee.

Filling the water bottle.

Opening the planner.

Writing the page.

Sending the email.

Doing the next small thing.

And then doing it again tomorrow.

That’s the kind of routine I can actually stick with.
